The Varsity Boys Basketball team defeated the defending WBAL champion Menlo Knights 50-48 in overtime. The Gator's were led by Brendan Carney's 12 points on 8 of 9 field goals, while Jai Deshpande chipped in 9.

Sacred Heart Prep ran into some trouble in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over twice in the closing seconds of regulation, allowing West Bay Athletic League rival Menlo School to tie the game and grab momentum in its own gym.

The Gators made sure it was nothing more than a dramatic interlude as they held on to knock off the WBAL's defending champs, 50-48, in overtime.
Brendan Carney scored 12 points and came up with key rebounds to lead Sacred Heart Prep (6-7, 3-1), which travels to Hillsborough for a game against Crystal Springs Uplands at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Gators moved into a second-place tie with Menlo (9-3, 3-1), which hosts Menlo-Atherton in a nonleague game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The King's Academy (9-5, 4-0) remains the lone undefeated team in league play after beating Priory, 61-44. Eastside Prep (5-6, 2-1) downed visiting Harker, 69-27, and Pinewood took care of Crystal Springs Uplands, 68-53, in other WBAL contests.

Eastside hosts The King's Academy at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Pinewood goes to Priory for a 6:30 p.m. game the same day.

Sacred Heart Prep's victory over Menlo played out like riding a mechanical bull ride: the team that held on the longest would be the winner.

The Gators nearly let go in regulation but survived to tame the beast in the end.

Everyone got involved in this ride as first Menlo took charge and then SH Prep took over before Menlo rallied once, using a huge fourth quarter to erase a 12-point deficit.

The overtime was more of the same as Menlo took a 46-44 edge before the Gators rallied to swcore six straight.

Jai Deshpande added nine points and both Yianni Gardner and Charlie Selna added eight.

Menlo was led by Cole Kastner, who scored 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting, including the game-tying basket in regulation following a David Mead steal and assist. Nate Solomon added nine points.
