Eric DeBrine spent a lot of his childhood in the gym with his father Keith, working on the fundamentals of basketball. That included the mental approach as well.

"One thing my dad taught me was when my shots aren't falling, to not give up," the Sacred Heart Prep senior said. "He would tell me to keep shooting. I learned that from him."

A good approach, as it turns out. After a mediocre first three quarters, DeBrine's shot returned just in time to propel Sacred Heart over Seaside, 60-52, in the second round of the Central Coast Section Division IV boys basketball playoffs in Atherton. The 6-foot-6 DeBrine finished with a game-high 25 points, to go along with 11 rebounds and two blocks, as the Gators advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.

DeBrine had 15 points in the fourth quarter as Sacred Heart turned a close game into a runaway. Teammate Evan Nichols had four of his eight points in the final quarter, and Dillon Galvin had five points (he finished with six).

Sacred Heart (13-12) led by as many as five points in the first half, but couldn't stretch it beyond that due to Seaside's defensive pressure and the inside-outside prowess of forward DeMarcus Hawkins (team-high 12 points). Speedy guard Matt Briscoe added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The game was tied three times in the third quarter, but Sacred Heart pulled away in the fourth thanks to three 3-pointers from Galvin and two by DeBrine and better defensive pressure.

"During halftime we decided that we had to put our D back together," DeBrine said. "We needed more ball pressure and extend our defense out to attack their shooters. And the help was better, taking away their easy layups."

Both of DeBrine's parents played basketball -- his mom at Mercy High School and his dad at Division III Plymouth State in New Hampshire. Although Eric is also a talented baseball player, he is going to play basketball next year -- Div. III Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

The Tufts mascot? Jumbo the Elephant. And on Thursday DeBrine proved to be the elephant in the room -- even though he was a tad late.

Kyle Schott had seven rebounds for the Gators, who will play Jefferson at Hartnell College in Salinas (time to be determined) in the quarterfinals.
