Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton (SHS) held the second part of its virtual Humanness – Citizens of the Earth TEDxSacredHeartSchoolsAtherton event this week, with over 100 individual viewers logging in to watch. If you missed the live event, view it here: Humanness Feb. 2021 TedxSacredHeartSchoolsAtherton
Stay tuned for SHS’s third installment of the event in the spring. Find the links to view the first part of the event held last year here: Humanness Spring 2020 TEDxSacredHeartSchoolsAtherton.
“We appreciate all the love and support for the speakers—we had many wonderful questions posed to our speakers,” said SHS Director of Technology Joy Lopez, who headed up the event. “For the spring 2021 event, let’s hope we can do this at least partially face-to-face.”
The three presenters, Harsimran Chohan (SHP ’22), Armin Hamrah (SHP ’23), Axel de Vernou (SHP ’21), along with this year’s host Anne-Sophie Lacombe (SHP ’21), were prerecorded presenting on stage at the SHS Performing Arts Center, but attended the webinar live to answer questions and speak with attendees.

“My parents weren't going to be there for me every time I needed to make a financial decision, and I had to find a way to learn about this stuff fast! How are students supposed to learn about foreign terminology commonly found in financial documents as well as what consequences their action, inaction, or lack of financial understanding may result in?” says Chohan.

Harsimran Chohan is a junior at Sacred Heart Preparatory (SHP) in Atherton. She is active within her school community and holds leadership positions on the Model UN Team, SHP Connections Committee, and Global Researching & Consultation (GRC) Program. Outside of school, Harsimran is training as a student pilot, works as a paddle-boarding/kayaking instructor, and plays club field hockey. Harsimran has always been interested in the arts, participating in school plays and a Bhangra (Indian dance) group since kindergarten. She aspires to pursue a career in law or psychology.
“Living in the center of our increasingly digital world, I will untangle the connection between social media and its dehumanization. I hope you come into my talk open-mindedly and leave with a new perspective on its dehumanizing effects,” says Hamrah.
I am Armin Hamrah, a sophomore in high school. One way in which I spend my free time is by watching TED Talks that inspire me, something I hope to accomplish with you. Some other ways in which I spend my pastime are playing soccer, piano, and chess, all of which revolve around real-life, human interactions.

“While scientists have been very present in the news lately tackling the issues that our world is facing, we often forget about the stressful path which they had to take to get there. In this talk, I will be discussing how we can reshape our STEM curricula for students interested in pursuing math and science related fields in a way that promotes mental balance and creativity,” says de Vernou.

My name is Axel de Vernou and I am a high school senior. While my main passions are writing and reading, I enjoy studying a variety of subjects through an interdisciplinary lens, which is what inspired me to create a TedTalk focused on the intersection between STEM and mental health. I believe that our society can make great progress when people of different interests share their ideas in ways that inspire reflection and discourse.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; TED Translators, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established The Audacious Project that takes a collaborative approach to funding ideas with the potential to create change at thrilling scale; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
