Courses & Electives
SHS is committed to instilling within each student an appreciation and enhanced understanding of our natural world. From the preschool to the high school, students engage across disciplines in the study of natural science and environmental stewardship, with a number of options for Preparatory students to increase their skills and experience through mandatory courses, optional electives, and independent study. All freshmen spend time in the SHS Farm & Gardens as part of a course in world history, as do upperclassmen taking human geography or AP environmental science.
Garden Summer Internship
In addition to working in the garden or greenhouse as part of a class, current and former SHP students can also apply to work as a garden intern during the summer, under the supervision of program director Dr. Stewart Slafter.
Green Team Club
A student-led organization at the high school, the Green Team enables active participation in environmental stewardship through tree plantings, local hikes, bike-to-school days, and campus recycling events. Members also coordinate the school’s Earth Week activities and fundraisers.
Environmental Ambassadors
Stewardship of earth’s resources is a fundamental component of the school’s mission and of the Service Learning Program. Environmental ambassadors are also Green Team members, and strive to bring a greater environmental awareness to the student body. Students earn service hours for the green initiatives in which they participate.
From the academic to the experiential, SHS students have a variety of ways to take part in the campus’ commitment to green initiatives--in some cases, sparking their own independent projects or efforts to inform and improve the community.
