Armando del Rio Named Top Coach
SHP’s boys’ soccer coach receives Central Coast Section 2021 Spring Sport Honor Coach award
The Central Coast Section (CCS) this week announced its 2021 Spring Sport Honor Coach Awards recipients, naming Sacred Heart Preparatory (SHP) boys’ soccer coach Armando del Rio as one of 10 “exceptional coaches” selected for recognition by Central Coast Section colleagues.
Del Rio has been coaching for 16 years, and is entering his 12th year coaching at SHP. Among his notable accomplishments are seven West Bay Athletic League (WBAL) titles and the team’s 2013 CCS Division II Co-Champion win.
“I feel immense gratitude to every student-athlete, parent, and coach that has ever been a part of our boys’ soccer program,” said del Rio, “[They] make it ‘easy’—the players and families are motivated, industrious, and committed to maximizing their potential.”
Del Rio added that his favorite aspect about coaching at SHP in particular is its community, noting how the pursuit of “excellence in all areas,” elevates standards and motivates the team.
“Armando is one of the most revered coaches on our campus by both the players and their parents,” said Frank Rodriguez, SHP assistant principal of athletics. “Both groups know how much his boys have meant to Coach del Rio during their time at SHP and how much they’ll continue to remain important to each other well after their time ‘repping the Prep’ is over.”
A testament to the lasting community within SHP’s athletics programs, says del Rio, is how much alumni “stay connected and attend games as strong and engaged supporters.”
“This is really the best honor of all—once a family is in our soccer program, they are always a part of our family,” said del Rio.
