About SHS Performances & Exhibitions

Throughout the school year, student performances in theatre, music, and dance, and student exhibitions in the visual arts are regularly scheduled at venues throughout campus. A comprehensive fine arts showcase of high school student work is held annually in December.

In addition, a number of the music programs may travel to participate in competitions, or to perform in regional concerts; recent travel for performance includes Hawaii, regional locations in California, and the Vatican.

Theatre

The regular theatrical season at the Preschool - GR 8 division includes one full-scale play production (GR 6-8) and one musical (GR 4-8).
The regular season at Sacred Heart Preparatory (GR 9-12) includes two mainstage productions (typically one play, one musical), and student showcase productions held in the smaller black box theatre. Additionally, SHP students have the opportunity to perform in student-led plays, the annual "Play-in-a-Day" event, the yearly Holiday Treat, and via an AP Shakespeare course.
Every three years, a full-scale, all-school musical is mounted, open to students in grades K-12 - a wonderful experience for all grades to perform with, and learn alongside, each other.

In addition, students in grades 4-12 have opportunities to experience and participate in technical theater craft - including set creation and construction, costuming and makeup, and lighting and sound design - and frequently operate the majority of backstage and technical operations during school productions.

Dance

Dance concerts are held annually to showcase group and individual performance.

Depending on student interest, dance instruction is intermittently offered at the middle school grades as a club or elective course. Students may perform at school functions or gatherings.

At SHP, the dance program is offered as part of the arts curriculum, with student performances given at the annual Holiday Treat and spring dance concert. In addition, a robust dance team, SHP Pulse, has grown significantly in recent years, taking part in a variety of local and regional competitions, as well as regularly performing at SHP sports games.

Music

All SHS music ensembles (instrumental and choral) have holiday and spring concerts on campus, and occasionally perform at school masses, events, and meetings.
GR 6-8 music ensembles host and participate in the annual Festival Vivace! clinics and performances on campus.

In past years, SHP choirs have taken part in regional competitions and festivals. In 2020, a joint SHP-Menlo School a capella group was invited to sing the National Anthem prior to an NBA Warriors game at Chase Center.

Yearly, SHP and GR 6-8 music ensembles may have the opportunity to travel for workshops, competition, or regional concert performances.

Visual Arts

Student work across all grades is regularly on display throughout campus buildings and grounds.
P-8 student work is exhibited the Murphy Administration Building on a thematic or rotating basis, and each year, the Mural Elective adds another large-scale student-designed and created mural painting to the campus. Annually, a spring arts festival showcases the range of K-8 student artistry, with select honors awarded by the P-8 administration and art teachers.
SHP student artwork is primarily exhibited in the William V. Campbell Center main lobby, the Michael J. Homer Center (outside of Harman Hall), and in the great hallway in the Main Building. SHP ceramics work can be seen in a variety of external locations on campus. Each year, advanced studio arts students regularly take part in the Congressional Art Competition. Digital arts and film students showcase their works at the Holiday Treat and throughout the year.
