Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer pick up wins over the weekend

The SHP Boys Basketball team defeated St. Ignatius 63-62, while the Girls team beat Leigh 64-37. The Boys Soccer team picked up a big road-win, defeating Carlmont 2-0.
Boys Basketball
Sacred Heart Prep beat the Wildcats (2-3) in a non-league game 63-62 Friday when Charlie Selna made one of two free throws on one end of the court and then blocked a last-second shot at the other end to preserve the win.
Selna finished with 14 points, five in the final quarter, for the Gators (4-1), who travel to play Jefferson (3-3) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
St. Ignatius hit a 3-pointer to open a 58-53 advantage with 3:39 remaining to play. SHP scored the next nine points to open a 62-58 edge with less than two minutes left.
Jai Deshpande, who finished with a team-high 17 points, grabbed an offensive rebound and drove in for a layup, Emmer Nichols hit a 3-pointer to tie it and Selna and James Pleasants each baskets.
The Wildcats came back to knot things at 62 with 34 seconds left. Selna was fouled with 17 seconds remaining, He missed his first attempt and then nailed his second.
Three timeouts and 16 seconds later, Selna blocked a layup attempt in the final second.
Aidan Braccia (12 points) recorded a couple of key defensive steals and both Nichols and Paul Barton came up with key rebounds during the hectic fourth tournament.
Boys Soccer
Sacred Heart Prep topped host Carlmont 2-0 in another non-league contest Friday as Alex Moretti and Liam Johnson each scored goals. Ethan Veghte and Kyle Nilsson had the assists.
The Gators (4-0-1) return to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 4 at Branham in San Jose.
Girls Basketball
Sacred Heart Prep took care of Leigh 64-37 in the third-place game of The King’s Academy Tournament.
Caroline Barclay hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack for the Gators (5-2), who host Mills at 5 p.m. Friday.
Denise Stine, Grace Florendo and Charlotte Levison each added 11 points and Kennedy Anderson had 10.
Host King's Academy beat Castilleja 47-40 in the consolation championship contest.
