Prep water polo: A productive weekend for local teams

Will Riley scored four goals, Isaac Rotenberg added three and Sacred Heart Prep edged Bellarmine, 12-11, in third-place game of the Memorial Cup Tournament in San Jose on Saturday. Isabella Bachler scored with six seconds remaining and the Sacred Heart Prep girls water polo team downed San Ramon Valley, 8-7, Saturday in the fifth-place game of the NorCal Invitational at Sacred Heart Prep.

Will Riley scored four goals, Isaac Rotenberg added three and Sacred Heart Prep edged Bellarmine, 12-11, in third-place game of the Memorial Cup Tournament in San Jose on Saturday.

Bellarmine went ahead, 10-7, with 4:44 remaining to play in the third period, the largest lead for either team.

Larsen Weigle scored a little more than a minute later to spark a run of five unanswered goals for the Gators. Riley scored a power play goal with 45 seconds left in the third period to tie it and Luke Johnston scored midway through the fourth period to give SHP an 11-10 advantage.

Rotenberg gave the Gators (22-2) a two-goal edge, scoring with 1:44 left. Bellarmine's Gabe Discipulo, a summer teammate of several SHP players, scored in the final second for the final margin of victory.

Overall, there were four lead changes and the game was tied on five other occasions. Both schools compete in the WCAL tournament at St. Francis beginning Thursday against opponents to be determined.

Sacred Heart Prep dropped a 12-9 decision to Campolindo (18-4) in the semifinals. The Cougars never trailed but their lead was never safe until the waning moments.

Riley scored with 3:21 remaining to play in the contest to draw the Gators within 10-9. Campo called a timeout and never allowed another score in ending Sacred Heart Prep's 15-game winning streak.

Walker Seymour scored three goals to lead the Gators and Kyle Ballack added two. Griffen Price recorded 20 saves on the day.

Girls Water Polo
Isabella Bachler scored with six seconds remaining and the Sacred Heart Prep girls water polo team downed San Ramon Valley, 8-7, Saturday in the fifth-place game of the NorCal Invitational at Sacred Heart Prep.

The Wolves tied the game with 88 seconds remaining to play. SH Prep called a timeout with 17 seconds left to set up a winning shot. Nellie McAdams corralled SRV's final attempt with no time left.

Bachler scored three goals for the Gators (18-6), who will play in the West Catholic Athletic League tournament beginning Thursday with a game against either Presentation or Mitty at St. Francis.

Alexandra Szczerba added a pair of goals and McAdams finished with seven saves.

Sacred Heart Prep took its first lead of the contest when Bachler scored on a power play with 4:40 remaining to play. The Gators were 2 of 6 on power plays overall while SRV was 4 of 6. McAdams blocked a Wolves' penalty shot.

Earlier in the day, Sacred Heart took an early lead and held on to beat Monte Vista Danville 12-6. Eleanor Facey scored five goals and Bachler added two.

Acalanes won the tournament with a 15-14 victory over Leland.
