SH Prep girls see water polo future and it looks good

The Girls Water Polo team played extremely well at the Amanda McDonald Invitational, utlimately losing to tournament champion Acalanes and Soquel.
Sacred Heart Prep's girls' water polo team got an inkling of what it might take to compete in the Central Coast Section and Northern California playoffs later this fall after spending a lovely weekend at the Menlo School and College swimming pool engaged in the Amanda MacDonald Invitational.
The Gators (7-5) won twice and lost twice, placing fourth among a group of four teams that will almost certainly be competing for CCS and NorCal titles.
Sacred Heart Prep lost to eventual tournament champion Acalanes, 12-8, in the semifinal match and then dropped a 7-4 decision to Soquel in the third-place game.
"These are teams we expect to see later in the year," Gators first-year James Frank said. "We're close to belonging in the top tier. If we're trying to be the best we can be, we want to be playing these teams."
SH Prep was tied with Acalanes (13-0) at 6-6 midway through the second period and were within 10-8 after Annabel Facey scored, with an assist from Ashley Penner, early in the fourth period.
Isabella Bachler scored three goals to lead the Gators, who return to West Catholic Athletic League play Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. road game at Presentation. Eleanor Facey added a pair of goals while Annabel Facey had three assists.
Nellie McAdams recorded 12 saves while Annabel Facey and Alexandra Szczerba each had two steals.
McAdams made 15 saves in the loss to Soquel (9-2). Sacred Heart Prep was within 5-4 in the final three minutes of the game.
"We played Acalanes tough and we've split with Soquel so far," Frank said. "I hope we can play them again."
Acalanes edged Leland (14-1), 11-10, in the championship game. Leland hasn't lost to a CCS team in three years.
