The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams turned in excellent performances at the Stanford Invitational this past weekend with the Boys finishing 3rd of 28 teams overall, and the Girls finishing 8th.
Castilleja’s Tevah Gevelber finished second in the girls Division V race at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 18:54.4, a personal best by more than a minute and a half.
“I’m real pleased with how she raced,’’ Castilleja coach Shaluinn Fullove said.
Gevelber was able to shatter her previous fastest time by pushing the pace early.
“She put herself in front and had the confidence to keep attacking when it got tough, to push through,’’ Fullove said. “Her mental fortitude was really tested.’’
With freshman Abigail Krenz sixth (19:42) and Lauren Traum (19:53) also finishing in the top 10 Castilleja had a combined team time of 1:45:41 to place fourth.
“Abigail had a real outstanding debut,’’ Fullove said. “The way she closed the last mile was real impressive. It’s going to be a fun season. The team has its eyes on November and the state meet. We were 10th at state last year.’’
Menlo School’s Charlotte Tomkinson ran 18:55.9 to place sixth in the Division IV race. Kyra Pretre was 11th at 19:11.5 and the Knights had a team time of 1:40:36 to take second place.
Sacred Heart Prep, with Geena Gibbons the top finisher (18th, 19:25) took eighth as a team with a time of 1:43:08.
In the Division II race, Woodside’s Sarah Perry was timed in 19:00 and took fourth place.
“That was a big surprise,’’ said first-year Woodside coach Al Hernandez, a longtime coach in the area. “I was hoping top 15.’’
Woodside freshman Ella Marsyla came in 14th in 19:31 as the Wildcats, with five freshmen among their top six, placed eighth with a team time of 1:41:38.
Palo Alto placed 10th (1:41:51), Menlo-Atherton 17th (1:44:27) and Gunn 18th (1:44.49) in the girls Division I race. Palo Alto’s Miranda Jimenez was the top individual finisher, taking 14th in 19:25.
On the boys side, Woodside sophomore Casey Orton had the fastest time among runners from schools in the Palo Alto Weekly coverage area, placing 14th with a clocking of 16:14 in the Division II race.
Menlo-Atherton placed 12th in Division I with a team time of 1:25:24. Ethan Mimeles came in 16th in 16:16, followed by Luke Scandlyn (16:37) and Cole Mendiatta (16:42). Gunn’s Justin Chiao placed 21st in 16:22.
Menlo School sophomore Kamran Murray was 11th in the Division IV race with a time of 16:24. Sacred Heart Prep took third in the team standings (1:25:49) with Max Cluss (13th, 16:35), Calvin Katz (15th, 16:39) and Axel de Vernou (22nd, 16:51) leading the way.
The Palo Alto boys took part in the 5K seeded race. Donald Taggert set the pace for the Vikings with a time of 16:32.2 for 75th place. Alex Evans was timed in 16:55.2. Paly had a team time of 1:25:18.
