Following an extensive search, Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton announced the appointment of Nasreen Ikram Hussain as new director for its Preschool & Kindergarten. Beginning her tenure at Sacred Heart on Sept. 1, Hussain is relocating from the East Coast, where she served as a K-4 literacy specialist for the prestigious Whitby School in Greenwich, CT.
With a rich and diverse educational background, Hussain brings more than 20 years of experience as an educator in top-rated independent and private schools in the U.S. and in Pakistan. Her prior classroom and administrative roles encompass both early childhood and elementary grades, with a particular emphasis on leadership in preschool and kindergarten programs. A founding head teacher for the International School, Karachi (P-12) and for The School at Columbia University (K-8), she has also served as an instructor, fieldwork supervisor, and literacy coach for graduate students at Columbia's Teachers College, and is currently a volunteer curriculum consultant for Developments in Literacy USA, a nonprofit engaged in improving education in Pakistan's underdeveloped regions.
Fluent in both Spanish and Urdu, Hussain holds a master's in curriculum and instruction with a minor in multicultural, multilingual education from George Mason University; a reading specialist master's from Teachers College at Columbia University; a bachelor's in mass communications from Assumption College (Philippines); and an advanced diploma in nursery foundation teaching and international Montessori, earned with distinction, from the Montessori Centre International.
“More than excellent credentials, however, she is clearly a person of great strength, warmth, and integrity, universally praised for her nurturing approach and genuine care for the children and families she serves, as well as for being a wonderful and thoughtful colleague,” said Director of Schools Richard A. Dioli. “In the weeks ahead, I look forward to formally introducing Mrs. Hussain to our Sacred Heart community, and I anticipate an outstanding year at the PSK under her leadership, as she continues to advance St. Madeleine Sophie’s vision to our youngest population on campus.”
