In Memoriam: "Coach" Bill Campbell

SHS community mourns the loss of Bill Campbell

This morning, April 25, our Sacred Heart community joined with numerous family and friends to remember the life of William V. "Bill" Campbell, an SHS coach, longtime supporter of the school, and parent of two wonderful alumni. Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton was honored to host the funeral Mass, held on the very field where Bill played such an instrumental role over the years. Close to 2,000 were in attendance, a testimony to Bill's immense impact and a life well lived.

Welcoming guests to the services, SHS Director of Schools Richard A. Dioli said:

On behalf of the Campbell Family, I would like to welcome you to this celebration of the life of our beloved "Coach," William V. Campbell.

This morning, as we gather at Bill's beloved Sacred Heart, appropriately on the football field where he spent countless hours coaching young student-athletes, we are united in our sorrow and our deep affection for a man whose larger-than-life presence gifted us all.

Yesterday, as I walked this very field, I said a prayer to Bill, asking him to bless each of us with some of those same qualities that set him apart.

  • The courage to tackle challenges,
  • the wisdom to see all sides,
  • the vision to serve to others, and
  • the determination to never forget our roots.
Today, we are honored to have so many of Bill's family and friends from across the country with us here, including those from his hometown of Homestead, PA; members of his Columbia University and Boston College families; and numerous colleagues throughout Silicon Valley and the Bay Area—all of whom feel both lucky and proud to have called Bill "friend."

The SHS family mourns the loss of our dear friend, advisor, and supporter, and we will be forever grateful for the time he spent with us. Godspeed, Coach.
