The Sacred Heart Prep girls soccer team may have lost some talented seniors from last year's Central Coast Section Division II runner-up team, but it appears there's plenty left to make another run.

Mia Shenk, the Gators leading scorer last year, was one of five different players to score in Wednesday's season-opening, 7-0, nonleague victory over visiting Hillsdale.

Menlo-Atherton, the defending CCS Division I champion, dropped a hard-fought, 1-0, decision to visiting Mitty, which competed in the Open Division last year.

It was the Bears' season-opener while Mitty improved to 2-0. M-A outshot the Monarchs, though Mitty goaltender Haley Verbeck was up to task, recording eight saves.

M-A visits Palo Alto for a 2:30 p.m. nonleague game Saturday.

With 12 returners, seven of them seniors, Sacred Heart Prep has already accomplished something last year's team failed to do and that's to win the opener.

The Gators, who were missing All-American and current Stanford freshman Tierna Davidson at the time, lost three of their first four games last season and were 3-4 at one point before finishing strong.

They'll get tested Saturday when they take the field at Fremont High against St. Francis at 3:20 p.m. as part of the Firebirds Classic.

Shenk, a junior, and freshman Isabelle Jordan each scored twice for Sacred Heart Prep. Jordan added a pair of assists, giving the ball to Shenk to make it 1-0 and then helping senior Lindsay Johnson make it 3-0 in the first eight minutes.

Johnson, who led the Gators in assists last season, returned the favor for Jordan, who scored both her goals within two minutes of each other. Cam Gordon assisted on the second one.

Gordon added an unassisted goal in the second half and McKenna Angotti, with an assist from Maggie O'Keefe, completed the scoring.
