Senior team captain Connor Johnston scored in the second half and the Sacred Heart Prep boys soccer team beat host Mountain View, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

The Gators, who lost their opener to the Spartans last year by the same score, are looking to return to the CCS playoffs after missing it last season despite a 6-2-1 mark over their final eight games.

Johnston was an all-league forward as a sophomore when Sacred Heart Prep surprised people by reaching the CCS Division III title match in 2015.

The Gators travel to Pioneer for a game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Johnston scored with an assist from freshman Liam Johnson.

Palo Alto dropped visiting Milpitas, 9-0, as Yahli Malchin recorded a goal and an assist.

The Vikings (1-0) host Carlmont on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
