Gators in Rio: Clark's Goal Punctuates USA Water Polo’s Opening Win


In her Olympic debut, KK Clark (SHP ’08) helped Team USA top Spain 11-4
 
 
On Aug. 9, 2012 Sacred Heart alumna KK Clark (SHP ’08) watched the U.S. Women’s Water Polo team capture its first Olympic gold medal at the London Games. Fast-forward four years to the day and this time in Rio, Clark and Team USA kicked off their quest to repeat as Olympic champions.
 
In her Olympic debut, the former Gator standout saw action off the bench in Team USA’s dominating 11-4 victory over Spain. Adding another first, Clark punctuated the win by scoring her first career Olympic goal with less than 30 seconds left in regulation.
 
Team USA will continue group play with China on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7:40 a.m. PT on NBC. Please note, the game will be on delay for viewers in the Pacific Time Zone.

Sheldon, USA Women’s Volleyball Update
 
Denise Sheldon (SJS ’93, SHP ’97) and the U.S. Women’s Volleyball team opened the Olympic Games behind victories over Puerto Rico and the Netherlands. With five points in Pool B, Team USA will face group-leader Serbia (six points) on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. PT.
 
The U.S. is seeking its first gold medal in women’s volleyball this summer in Rio.

Sacred Heart in Rio
 
Sacred Heart alumnae are off to a great start at the Rio Games, capturing three medals thus far. U.S. swimmers Katie Ledecky (Stone Ridge ’15) and Lia Neal (Convent of the Sacred Heart NYC ’13) helped guide Team USA to silver in the 400-meter freestyle relay on Aug. 7. Ledecky went on to pick up more hardware, capturing gold and breaking her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle later that day.
 
Rounding out Sacred Heart's Day 2 medalists was Australian synchronized diver Anabelle Smith (Sacré Couer Melbourne ’11), who took home the bronze medal in the 3-meter springboard synchronized dive with partner Maddison Keeney.
