Gators in Rio: Sheldon, USA Women’s Volleyball Start Strong

Sheldon and U.S. Women's Volleyball team opened Rio Games with pair of victories

Following the excitement of the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony on Aug. 5, SHS alumna Denise Sheldon (SJS ’93, SHP ’97) and the U.S. Women’s Volleyball team kicked off action behind a pair of victories.

The top-ranked team in world opened with a sweep of Puerto Rico (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) on Aug. 6, before Team USA faced a tougher challenge in the Netherlands on Aug. 8. Coming back from a set down, the Americans took the Dutch into a five-set thriller that lasted nearly two hours to earn a 3-2 victory (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8).

Sheldon and the U.S. will now prepare to square off with Serbia on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. PT.

Clark Readies for Game Day

KK Clark (SHP ’08) and USA Women's Water Polo's Olympic run will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 9 versus Spain at 7:40 a.m. PT. Team USA enters the tournament as the defending gold medalists.

Sacred Heart in Rio

Sacred Heart alumnae are off to a great start at the Rio Games, capturing three medals thus far. U.S. swimmers Katie Ledecky (Stone Ridge ’15) and Lia Neal (Convent of the Sacred Heart NYC ’13) helped guide Team USA to silver in the 400-meter freestyle relay on Aug. 7. Ledecky went on to pick up more hardware, capturing gold and breaking her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle later that day.

Rounding out Sacred Heart's Day 2 medalists was Australian synchronized diver Anabelle Smith (Sacré Couer Melbourne ’11), who took home the bronze medal in the 3-meter springboard synchronized dive with partner Maddison Keeney.
