Sacred Heart Prep overcame numerous mistakes with timely production both sides of the ball to beat Terra Nova 14-13 in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division homecoming football game Saturday.

A bad snap prevented the Tigers from a possible game-winning field goal with no time left on the clock, kicking off a wild on-field celebration by SHP players.

The ending erased memories of last week's loss to Burlingame, which converted a two-point play late in the game to grab the win.

Junior quarterback Mitchell Taylor, making the start for the Gators (2-4, 1-1), directed an 11-play, 52-yard drive for the winning touchdown with 5:42 remaining to play.

After a penalty that nullified a first-down pass play, Taylor recognized an unguarded path down the middle of the field and picked up 20 yards for the first down on Terra Nova’s 20-yard line. After a loss of two yards, Zach Freire managed to gain 12 yards when there was nowhere to run.

Taylor completed an eight-yard reception to Andrew Latu to the one. Latu went the final yard to tie the game and Sean Tinsley’s extra point put SHP ahead.

Terra Nova (4-2, 0-1) took over on its own 31-yard yard line with plenty of time. Three completed passes and a personal foul later, the Tigers had a first down and the ball on SHP’s 12-yard line.

Shay O’Kelly, rushing from the outside, stretched to knock down one pass, another pass was incomplete and Mat Bucher got to the quarterback for a one-yard loss, setting up a field goal try that was never attempted as the snap sailed high.

Terra Nova took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter, following an 82-yard pass play and one-yard run.

The Gators responded on its first drive of the second half, with Luis Mendoza going the final 32 yards.

The Tigers regained the lead when a punt was fumbled into the end zone and a Terra Nova player fell on it.

Sacred Heart Prep rushed for 178 yards, using a back-by-committee that featured Latu (54 yards), Freire (48), Mendoza (42) and Anthony Noto (36).

Taylor missed on his first four passes and then went 7-of-10 for 132 yards the rest of the way.

Terra Nova’s Dominic Gordon threw for 257 yards. SHP thwarted The Tigers’ running attack, limiting them to 29 total rushing yards.

Sacred Heart Prep makes the short trip to Menlo-Atherton for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night against the Bears.
