Prep report: SHP water polo wins battle of Valparaiso Avenue

The SHP Boys and Girls Water Polo teams defeated rival Menlo 18-7 and 16-6. 

Boys Water Polo:
Gavin West scored six goals, Will Swart added five and visiting Sacred Heart Prep downed Menlo School 18-7 in a West Catholic Athletic League boys water polo contest Wednesday.
The pair also combined on five assists while Jack Vort and Luke Johnston added two goals apiece and three assists combined.
Swart and Vort combined for nine steals and Griff Price made nine saves on a .600 save percentage for the Gators (2-0, 2-0), who are just getting started.
Greg Hilderbrand scored three goals and Tommy Kiesling and Jack Murad each added two for the Knights (5-2, 1-1), who host De La Salle at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Menlo, which suffered just its second loss in seven matches, was within 5-3 when the Gators scored five unanswered goals to take control of the match.
Sacred Heart Prep competes at the 28-team South Coast Invitational and will take on some of the top teams in the nation. The Gators are seeded first in the Foothill section and will meet either Foothill or Long Beach Wilson in the second round on Thursday following an exhibition.
In a PAL Ocean Division game, Sequoia topped Priory 9-2.

Girls Water Polo:
Sacred Heart Prep scored the first six goals en route to a 16-6 WCAL victory over Menlo. Brienz Lang, Megan Newby, Natalia Szczerba and Ella Woodhead shared the team scoring lead, each with three goals.
Eight different players scored for the Gators (7-0, 2-0), who travel to Clovis for a doubleheader with the host Cougars and Clovis West on Saturday.
Malia Chavinson scored twice to lead the Knights (3-3, 0-1), who meet Presentation at Bellarmine on Wednesday evening.
