Purcell, Sacred Heart Prep end skid against Burlingame

Chris Jackson, West Coast Preps
Sacred Heart Prep shut out Burlingame for its second straight win of the season, snapping the senior class’ skid in the form of a 17-0 victory on Saturday afternoon in Atherton ahead of next week’s showdown against the King’s Academy.
It was four years coming for Sacred Heart Prep’s senior class.
For the last three years, many of Sacred Heart Prep’s seniors never got to experience a win against Burlingame while as varsity players. Last year, it was a close 21-14 loss.
This year, they wanted it to be different, and it was.
Sacred Heart Prep shut out Burlingame for its second straight win of the season, snapping the senior class’ skid in the form of a 17-0 victory on Saturday afternoon in Atherton ahead of next week’s showdown against the King’s Academy.
“It feels amazing,” said Sacred Heart Prep senior quarterback Teddy Purcell. “I’ve never beaten them. Me and my fellow seniors have never beaten them, so we knew that leading up to the week. We were talking about that. As soon as we finished our last game up, this week we knew we had Burlingame. We knew we had a tough task, and we had to strap up our boot straps and be ready to hit these guys in the mouth.”
Purcell was the star of the show for Sacred Heart Prep.
The star signal-caller, who threw for 1,480 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions as a junior, extended play after play and showed grit and toughness every single snap of the game, completing 23 of of 30 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown – which came on a 20-yard strike to senior Paul Barton to put Sacred Heart Prep up 17-0 with 2:42 left in the third quarter.
Through two games this season, Purcell is 35-of-45 for 454 yards and four touchdowns.
“He’s one of the best leaders I’ve ever had in sports,” Barton said. “Every practice he comes out ready to play. He’ll play through whatever, and he keeps reiterating how important it is to come focused. I think he’s one of the best leaders we have, and he’s the reason we were able to get this win today."

Barton was Purcell’s top target of the night, as the University of North Carolina bound lacrosse player excelled in just his second-ever football game, catching seven passes for 96 yards and a score.
It was the second time in his two-game football career he surpassed 90 yards receiving, as he had a team-high 98 yards and two touchdowns in a win against Aragon last week.
“He’s a stud,” Purcell said. “Overall, he’s an unreal athlete. He’s committed for lacrosse, but I tried to get him out here. He’s one of my best friends. Just to come play with me. I feel so lucky to be able to throw to 6-5, 205 pounds, be able to run like that. It’s just incredible. Amazing athlete.”
Behind Barton were eight other players who caught passes, including four who finished with 20-plus receiving yards in senior Cav Williams (43 yards), junior Jake York (41 yards), senior Will Mackie (21 yards) and sophomore Andrew Latu (21 yards).
Latu also had 40 rushing yards on 12 carries, featuring the first score of the contest to put Sacred Heart Prep ahead 7-0 to begin the second quarter.
And Sacred Heart Prep’s defense dominated again.
Against a ground and pound Burlingame rushing attack, Sacred Heart Prep held Burlingame scoreless, meaning its defense has surrendered a combined 12 points through the first two games of the spring season.
The Gators forced two turnovers, with Alec Tonas intercepting a tipped pass and recovering a fumble.
“They’ve been awesome,” Barton said. “They provide energy, especially in that fourth quarter. The offense was kind of lacking. It seemed like we were a little tired, but the energy on defense kept making plays and allowing us to get back out on the field. That helped us fuel to get that win.”

Burlingame senior Isaac Frankel led the team with 41 rushing yards on 11 touches, coming one week after his 61 yards on 14 carries.
Fellow senior Kyle Sieben had a team-best 44 receiving yards on four catches.
Burlingame aims for its first win of the year at home versus No. 7 Menlo-Atherton at 7 p.m. Friday. Sacred Heart Prep will face one of the Bay Area’s top teams in No. 20 King’s Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
