Model UN Team Places Nationally for First Time

Three students on the SHP team won awards at the Berkeley conference
Sacred Heart Preparatory’s (SHP) Model United Nations (MUN) team won three awards competing virtually at the Berkeley Model UN (BMUN) conference over the weekend, the first time in SHP history the team has won an award at the conference.

This year, the 44-person team competed against 105 other schools throughout the United States with a total of 1,969 delegates. “Our students have been going at it all day since Friday night and we received the amazing news during the closing ceremony,” said SHP social science teacher Greg Roig, the club’s advisor.

With this being the last conference of the year, the accomplishments this past weekend capped off the students’ most successful season yet. A month ago, the team garnered three times the awards compared to a year ago at the Santa Clara Valley MUN conference.

The following students won awards at BMUN 2021:

Clara Degois Sainz (SHP ’22) - Commendation for AIDS Crisis Committee
Dena Aalaei (SHP ’23) - Commendation for United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Ryan Kiernan (SHP ’21) - Commendation for United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
