Davidson is No. 1 overall pick of NWSL College draft

Tierna Davidson, who graduated from Sacred Heart Prep in 2016, was selected first overall in the NWSL College Draft on Thursday by the Chicago Red Stars.

Stanford junior defender and Sacred Heart Prep grad Tierna Davidson was the No. 1 overall pick of the National Women's Soccer League College Draft on Thursday. Stanford's Jordan DiBiasi was the No. 3 overall pick and Tegan McGrady was selected with the seventh overall pick.

Davidson, who missed the majority of the the season with an injury, was taken by the Chicago Red Stars. DiBiasi and McGrady both went to the Washington Spirit, which made Andi Sullivan the top overall pick last year.

Davidson, currently with the United States National Team as they prepare for the World Cup, was named the 2018 U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year and leaves Stanford with six goals and eight assists. She anchored a back line that helped Stanford win its second national championship in 2017.

She became first national team player since Stanford grad Julie Foudy in 1994 to play 90 minutes in each of her first five senior caps.

As a sophomore, Davidson was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year, and a first team All-American.

Davidson helped Sacred Heart Prep win two Central Coast Section titles.

Over her four-year career, DiBiasi appeared in 92 of 93 games with 91 starts, 31 goals, including 15 game winners, 23 assists and 85 total points. A 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, DiBiasi captained Stanford to its eighth College Cup in 11 seasons.

McGrady made 72 appearances, including 61 starts, over four seasons, with four goals and 13 assists. A major contributor to both the attack and defense, McGrady earned first-team All-Region and first-team All-Pac-12 recognition as a senior in 2018.
