Gator Football & Boys Water Polo Impressive in Wins

Both the Boys Water Polo team and Football team put together impressive performances yesterday. The Water Polo team defeated #1 ranked Harvard-Westlake 11-10 in the morning, and then beat Vista of San Diego 13-8, while the Boys Football team beat Hillsdale 39-6. The Gators are now 4-0 on the season, and will play San Mateo at home next Saturday afternoon.

Tommy Barnds rushed for two touchdowns and Raymond Price III threw for a pair of scores, helping Sacred Heart Prep stay unbeaten with a 39-6 victory over host Hillsdale in a nonleague football game Friday night.

Tevita Moimoi also rushed for a touchdown and a two-point conversion, Jake Davison blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety and Ronan Donnelly added a 27-yard field goal and two PAT kicks for the Gators (4-0), who host San Mateo in a nonleague game next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Raymond Price IIISH Prep took the opening kickoff and marched into the end zone, with Barnds rushing the final two yards. Moimoi added the two-point conversion and the Gators never looked back.

Jack Kirkham caught a 15-yard touchdown pass and Dante Cacchione was on the receiving end of a 32 yard touchdown reception.

Ben Horvath recorded a sack, forced a fumble and recovered it for the Gators. Donnelly intercepted a pair of passes in the fourth quarter and Joey Dahlkemper also had a sack.

After back-to-back three-win seasons, Sacred Heart Prep appears intent on returning to form of the stretch between 2007-15 in which the Gators were a combined 99-21-1 with two state championship game appearances and five Central Coast Section titles.

Boys Water Polo
Larsen Weigle scored with 1:38 remaining to play to lift the Sacred Heart Prep boys water polo team past host and top-seeded Harvard-Westlake, 11-10, in preliminary play of the Elite Eight Invitational on Friday. The Gators also downed Vista of San Diego, 13-8, to earn a spot in Saturday's semifinal match at noon.

Weigle, who is headed for Stanford along with teammate Andrew Churukian, scored nine of SH Prep's 24 goals on the day to keep the fifth-seeded Gators (4-0) undefeated on the young season.

Sacred Heart Prep meets Loyola in one semifinal while Harvard-Westlake plays Newport Harbor in the other semifinal.

Against Harvard-Westlake, the biggest lead either team held was at 5-3 by the Wolverines. The Gators never led in the contest until Luke Johnston scored to make it 10-9 with 3:05 remaining to play.

Harvard-Westlake tied it with just under two minutes to play and Weigle scored 20 seconds late for the final margin.

The difference came in power play situations. The Gators converted fpour of their seven while limiting the Wolverines to 2 of 6.

SHP freshman goalie Griffen Price recorded 10 saves and made two steals. Will. Riley also had two steals and recorded an assist. 

Weigle scored a team-high four goals, followed by Churukian with three. Johnston added a pair.

Vista opened an early 2-1 advantage but the Gators responded with four straight goals and were never headed again.

Weigle scored four of his five goals in the game's first eight minutes. Johnston, Xavier Marco and Walker Seymour also scored for the Gators.
