Stanford freshman Sara Choy (SHP '18) was the recipient of the 2018 USTA Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship Award, presented to her at the USTA Semi-Annual Meeting in New York City.

The USTA today announced that Sacred Heart Prep grad Sara Ruth Choy, a resident of Palo Alto, and Bill Duo of Portage, Mich., were named the winners of the 2018 USTA Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship Award. The two were honored at the USTA Semi-Annual Meeting in New York City.

Choy, who was 79-1 as a singles player against high school competition, graduated from SHP with a cumulative 4.12 GPA and will play for Stanford.

She received several awards and achievements for tennis, school and sportsmanship success, such as the 2015 Zimmerman/Johnson USTA National Tournament Sportsmanship Award and being named to the USTA Junior Leadership Team, focusing on leadership, sportsmanship and character.

Other awards include the Girls’ 14s Annual NorCal Junior Sportsmanship Award in 2013 and 2014 and the Maze Cup Sportsmanship Award in 2015 and 2017, to name a few.

Choy gives back to the community by helping her brother with a nonprofit tennis organization focusing on giving at-risk children a chance to play tennis volunteering at East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring, helping children with studies and tennis.

In her junior year of high school, she helped clean up beaches after taking a course on water and its presence in the community. Choy continues to excel in the classroom and as an athlete. She exemplifies character on and off the court and is a team player.

“Both of these student-athletes are incredible individuals on and off the tennis court,” said Craig Morris, USTA's Chief Executive. “They give back to their community, mentor younger athletes and are great role models. Both Andrew and Timothy epitomize what great sportsmanship is all about and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for both of them.”

Each award winner must be a junior player who exemplifies the finest qualities of sportsmanship in tournament play as well as one who maintains the finest traditions of the great sportsmen/women of tennis, past and present.

The award is given in honor of 1967 Hall of Famer Bill Talbert, who was highly regarded for his high standards of sportsmanship.
