SHS Global Service Day at Cooley Landing

Register today to join SHS’s coastal cleanup event September 15th.
For years SHP students, faculty, and family would trek to San Francisco on the third Saturday of September for the state’s largest volunteer event, Coastal Cleanup Day. But last year, some parents and faculty launched an effort to make an impact closer to home.

“A few P-8 families gathered at Bedwell Bayfront Park in Menlo Park. We had a ball,” said Kelly Power, P-8 service program coordinator. “It’s a great family service opportunity because there are no age restrictions. Everyone can participate and take care of our environment.”

In the spirit of the school’s Goal IV – the building of community as a Christian value – SHS community members will meet September 15th at Cooley Landing in East Palo Alto (2100 Bay Road, East Palo Alto, CA 94303) from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The event is part of the Sacred Heart Network Global Service Day, when all 24 Network schools in North America and Schools of the Sacred Heart around the world come out to serve their communities.

This year, Global Service Day also marks the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne’s arrival in the New World to open the first Sacred Heart School in North America.

“Global Service Day is so important to the community at large,” said Matt Carroll, SHP service-learning coordinator and religious studies teacher. “Every piece of garbage, debris, and inorganic material we remove from the beach is one more that doesn’t make its way into our ocean, marine life, and, ultimately back into us. We’re stewards of the gift of God’s creation. This is just one attempt to reflect that."

All SHS students, families, faculty, staff, alums, and friends are invited. Register in advance.
