Eighth Grade Gov Team Attends Model UN

Model UN engages students in an exploration of current world topics.

Last week, members of the eighth grade Competitive Civics team (Gov Team) attended the International High School Model UN conference in New York City.

SHS’s 16 Gov Team students joined over 1,000 students from 60 different countries to solve a slew of global issues. Acting as delegates from Pakistan, SHS students tackled topics ranging from gender equality and abolition of the death penalty to combating international terrorism.

During the course of the conference students gave speeches, built alliances, and drafted resolutions. “Through this, students built a sense of global awareness and the attitudes necessary for active citizenship and leadership,” said Nicole Rehberg, who co-teaches Competitive Civics along with Robin Laws.

The Gov Team is a year-long eighth grade elective for students to develop an in-depth understanding of United States government and global issues. In Model UN, the goal is to engage students in exploration of current world topics while navigating plausible diplomatic resolutions.
