A Dramatic Performance at Art Informance Day

Parents Experience the Creative Arts at LMS

During the first grade “Art Informance” held earlier this month, parents got a “day in the life” experience in the arts at SHS, rotating through drama, art, and music classes.

First graders in art teacher Ciara Bedingfield’s class had recently learned printmaking. Students showed their parents how to sketch a design into foam plates, roll a thin coat of paint onto the foam, and lastly press the plate against paper with the help of rollers to evenly transfer the design over. The resulting prints ended up beautifying nearly an entire wall in the art classroom.

SHS parents Ardavan Tehrani and Parisa Gholami created several prints working alongside their first-grader. They complimented the program, saying they thoroughly enjoyed learning more about all the available activities.

“One thing that came to my mind today is the quality of the programs are such that as parents we don’t think that we can replicate them; that tells you that the school is offering something very special,” said Tehrani.

In music teacher Kris Hauck’s class, students and parents were each handed a Boomwhacker—plastic tubes tuned to different musical pitches—and were given about 10 minutes to learn how to play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Each was assigned a specific note, which proved a challenging task for adults and students alike. After a brief rehearsal time, each group performed the song for the rest of the class.

Moving on to drama teacher Tom Segal’s class, parents watched as the students performed interpretive drama and choreography after receiving on-the-spot prompts, and showed off their miming chops, as well. After hustling between classrooms, parents and students relaxed with deep breathing—learning how to let go of any worries or stress—the best way to prepare for a dramatic performance.
