The Summer Trek of SHP “Global Citizens”

Over summer, a record 23 Sacred Heart Prep students took part in the international exchange program.

Over the summer months, Sacred Heart Preparatory has sent a record 23 students—the largest group to date—to destinations in Europe, Asia, and Australia as part of its Sacred Heart Global Citizens program.

Designed as a residential exchange with students in Sacred Heart schools around the globe, the popular program offers cultural immersion and exposure, in-country host family stays, and a chance to take part in another Sacred Heart campus and community far from home. Central to the experience is reciprocity for those international students interested in a U.S. stay—and the opportunity to develop close friendships among the worldwide Sacred Heart network.

Over June, July, and August, eight rising seniors, seven rising juniors, seven rising sophomores, and one rising eighth grader made up the group of summer SHP Global Citizens.

A few highlights:

Three students traveled to Taipei, Taiwan to spend time at the Sacred Heart High School for Girls. One, having studied Mandarin for six years, is assisting with English classes and touring the city with her host family; the other two are attending a two-week Chinese Culture Camp.

Six students journeyed to Seville, Spain, part of a growing relationship with the school Colegio Santa Maria del Valle.  Four students who hosted students last winter are in Barcelona for their reciprocal exchange.  And one arrived in Madrid just in time for end-of-school-year festivities and to join the Colegio Sagrado Corazón students on a school trip to Valencia.

Two students took up temporary residence in France, respectively staying with a host family near the Belgium border, and on the Atlantic coast.  One had the chance to visit Le Perverie School of the Sacred Heart in Nantes, the other, La Croix Blanche School of the Sacred Heart in Bondues.

Two students are spending summer in Vienna, Austria speaking German and enjoying the classic Viennese arts, coffee houses, and soaring Alps.

Sampling life “down under” in Brisbane, Australia, one attended winter classes at Stuartholme School of the Sacred Heart in Brisbane, along with cuddling koalas and petting kangaroos. Four students went to Baradene College of the Sacred Heart in Auckland, New Zealand, spending a few weeks attending the school—our first SHP group to exchange with Auckland. While there, one bungee-jumped off the Auckland Bridge!
