Mark Grieb Named Football Program Director

Former pro quarterback to lead Gators in 2017

Following a national search, Sacred Heart Prep has named Mark Grieb football program director and varsity head coach, All-School Director of Athletics Bret Simon announced. Grieb, who will oversee all aspects of the football program, enters the role after serving as an assistant coach with the Gators the previous two seasons.

"I am thrilled that Coach Grieb will be leading our program. After a nationwide search, we found the perfect candidate in our own backyard,” said Simon. “Coach Grieb has the high level football experience and knowledge, and most importantly, the leadership skills to continue and grow our Gator football tradition."

A former professional quarterback for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League, Grieb boasts 15 years of coaching experience in the professional, collegiate and high school ranks.

"I am excited and honored to be named the football program director and varsity head coach at Sacred Heart Prep,” said Grieb. “I am proud to continue my involvement with the football program in a new role that offers me the opportunity to have an even greater impact both on and off the field.

“As an assistant coach for the past two years, I have observed the exceptional support that comes from the community. I look forward to continue building Gator pride, sharing my vision for the program and beginning preparation for the 2017 football season! Go Gators!"

As an assistant with the Gators, Grieb primarily worked with the quarterbacks and receivers, while assisting scout opponents, offensive game planning and facilitating team activities.

"Mark is perfectly suited to lead us forward into the next phase of Sacred Heart Prep football,” added Frank Rodriguez, SHP assistant principal-athletics. “His exceptional coaching experience, alignment with both the core values and the academic expectations of our school and the extremely positive connection he already has with the team and returning coaching staff set him apart from the rest of the excellent applicants we had for the position. We are very excited to have Coach Grieb at the helm, for what we hope are many, many seasons of Gator football!"

Prior to joining SHP, Grieb spent three seasons as the head coach at Menlo College, overseeing all aspects of the program and serving as the offensive play caller.

Grieb, who entered the coaching ranks as an assistant coach UC Davis in 1998, has also spent time as the offensive coordinator of the Sabercats (2010-12), an assistant coach at Foothill College (2002-03) and a graduate assistant for the Stanford University football team from 2000-01.

Grieb earned his bachelor degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Davis and master’s in science education from Stanford. In addition to coaching, he has been teaching for nearly a decade, including high school science classes over the last four years.
