The Sacred Heart eighth grade Competitive Civics class traveled to New York City to participate in the Global Classrooms International Middle School Model United Nations Conference from Mar. 30 to Apr. 2. The class, commonly referred to as the Gov Team, joined more than 1,000 students from the United States and abroad.
Led by Middle School teachers Robin Laws and Nicole Rehberg, the students focused on topics ranging from the rights of migrant workers to preserving cultural heritage and human experimentation. Acting as delegates from Ecuador, the team gave speeches, built alliances, debated ideas and drafted solution papers with the purpose of finding realistic solutions through diplomatic actions. For their work, the team earned two honorable mention awards.
Over the three-day conference, the students committed themselves to Goal V: Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom, by living as if they were truly working diplomats. They also were responsible for purchasing their own groceries, navigating around Manhattan by foot and on the subway, and coalescing with fellow students in order to create world change.
