Middle School Artwork in SchoolArts Magazine

Three students featured in January 2021 issue with story by teacher Ciara Bedingfield

Artwork created by three students—now freshmen—when they were in Ciara Bedingfield’s seventh grade art class, has been selected for the national magazine SchoolArts’ January 2021 issue.

The pieces include Makena Tom’s (SHP ’24) mixed-media portrait of actress Marsai Martin, Sadie Taylor’s (SHP ’24) collage of Rosa Parks, and Vienna Zhang’s (currently not enrolled at SHP) drawing of author Angie Thomas.

During Black History Month in the spring of 2019, LMS art teacher Ciara Bedingfield assigned her seventh grade students with a project inspired by We Good, a photo collage launched by singer Beyoncé honoring 45 Black men and women “changemakers,” including activists, artists, writers, chefs, and fashion designers.

Students chose a person from that collage to research and explore how to represent through different mediums, both 2D and 3D, using materials such as tooling foil, found objects, clay, paint, and surfaces ranging from paper and book covers to ceramic plates. The finished pieces were exhibited in SHS’s Main Building gallery during the summer of 2019.
