SHP girls can look forward to a bright water polo future

Despite falling to Acalanes in the CIF NorCal Regional Championship, the future is bright for the SHP Girls Water Polo program.

It may be the end of a season but for the Sacred Heart Prep girls water polo team, it's also the start of a promising future.

Ola Szczerba scored twice and recorded four steals in the Gators' 10-2 loss to Acalanes in the championship match of the NorCal Championships at Independence High in San Jose on Saturday.

SHP reached its first NorCal championship match after winning its first Central Coast Section Open Division title a week earlier. All but four of the players are eligible to return and will do so with another year of experience and another lofty set of goals.

The Gators were 27-0 against every high school team not based in Lafayette. They were 0-4 against Acalanes (22-0), the presumed best prep girls team in the nation and which has not lost in three years.

The Dons' win streak is somewhere close to 95 and the roster includes future (likely) Olympian Jewel Roemer, a senior who scored four goals, recorded an assist, drew three exclusions and involved her teammates against SHP.

Sacred Heart Prep had seven players earn All-West Catholic Athletic League recognition this season, including senior Annabel Facey, juniors Bella Bachler and Eleanor Facey and sophomore Ella Woodhead on first team.

Szczerba, a junior, and sophomore Ashley Penner earned second team honors and junior goalie Megan Norris was honorable mention.

The six returning all-league players make for a solid foundation. The Gators will be entertaining again next fall.

SH Prep won 10 consecutive CCS Division II titles between 2007-16 and looks ready to start another streak with James Frank at the helm. He just completed his second full season as coach after working with the boys team for years.

The Gators averaging 11.3 goals a game, nearly double the 6.4 average of their opponents.
