SH Prep girls finish second at Spikefest II tournament

Sacred Heart Prep, which can finish no lower than a third-place tie in the competitive West Bay Athletic League, placed second at Saturday's Spikefest II girls volleyball tournament at Independence High on Saturday.

The Gators won their first four matches before running into Los Gatos in the championship match. The Wildcats took the title with a 25-20, 25-23 victory over SHP.

That's still an improvement over Sacred Heart Prep's finish from Spikefest I in August, in which the Gators finished 3-2, including a 25-21, 25-12 loss to Los Gatos.

The Gators could know as early as Tuesday where they finish and whether they go straight to the Central Coast Section tournament or will participate in a CCS play-in match on Oct. 29.

Sacred Heart Prep (21-9, 8-3) has a bye Tuesday and hosts league champion Notre Dame Belmont at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Tigers (24-6, 10-0) hold a three-game lead over Harker, who they play Tuesday, and SHP with two to play.

Notre Dame Belmont will likely play in the Open Division, giving the three remaining teams a chance at a higher seed in CCS play.

For seniors Elena Radeff, Leia Bonifacio, Evelyn Sutton and Reagan Smith, it's their final go-around. Thus far, they have seen SHP reach two NorCal championship matches, winning once and reaching the state Division II title game.

The Gator seniors enter Thursday's match with an 89-48 overall record since the start of 2016 and another NorCal appearance would be a nice way to send them off.
