Fleischli headlines SMDJ Honor Roll

Daily Journal Staff Report
Nate Fleischli headlines this weeks San Mateo Daily Journal's Honor Roll! Fleischli threw a 3-hit shutout against crosstown rival Menlo while walking none and striking out 10.
Logan Snow, Carlmont baseball. The Scots are off to a 2-0 start in PAL Bay Division play after a sweep of Capuchino and Snow had a hand in both victories. The senior had three hits in the series, including a 2-for-3 day with an RBI and a run scored in last Wednesday’s 8-1 win. Then Friday, the right-hander turned in the best start of his varsity career, allowing one run on two hits through six innings while striking out 11 to up his pitching record to 2-0 on the year.

Carly Watts, Terra Nova girls’ track and field. The senior has emerged as the class of the throwers’ arena in the Central Coast Section — again. After earning CCS titles in both events as a junior last season, Watts is again dominating the section with the top throws in each shot put and discus in CCS this year. Saturday at the Serra Top 7 meet, she recorded a personal record and CCS best shot put distance of 45 feet, 6 inches. It marks the best shot put distance in CCS since 2016 when Valley Christian’s Elena Bruckner topped out at 54-7, and the best distance by a public-school thrower in the section since 2010 when Meagan McKee of Santa Teresa threw a PR of 46-9.

Patrick Harmon, Terra Nova boys’ swimming. With several ailing swimmers in the Tigers’ ranks, including sophomore standout Luka Goncharov, Harmon stepped up as a double winner in last Friday’s dual meet at Westmoor. Goncharov usually rules the 50 free but wasn’t able to compete due to illness, so Harmon stepped up with a personal record of 24.72 seconds to earn the win. He also took the individual win in the 100 back with a 1:04.07. The 99-53 win keeps the Terra Nova boys unbeaten in PAL Ocean Division competition with two dual meets to go. The Tigers now have their fate in their own hands in the quest to earn their first Ocean Division title since 2010. Goncharov wasn’t the only Terra Nova swimmer dealing with illness. Senior sprinter Kaycie Lindland also missed the meet but earned the break after her performance two weeks ago against Half Moon Bay, when he won the 100 free in 56.10 to set a new program record. The 93-76 win March 15 was Half Moon Bay’s first regular-season league loss since 2016, also the last time the Terra Nova girls won the Ocean Division title. Terra Nova actually has each of it four teams — including boys’ and girls’ junior-varsity — in first place. The school’s swimming program has not swept all four Ocean Division titles since the school began keeping records in 1976.

Nate Fleischli, Sacred Heart Prep baseball. You shut out your rival, you make the honor roll. That’s the deal. Fleischli showed up in spades against SHP rival Menlo, firing a three-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 10 in a 9-0 victory. It’s the fifth career complete game for the senior right-hander but his first career shutout.

Sara Osterberg, Menlo-Atherton girls’ track and field. The senior helped the M-A girls win the team championship Saturday at the Serra Top 7 meet. Osterberg ruled the distance events with two wins, earning the title in the 1,600 with a time of 5:20.93 and also topping the podium in the 3,200 with a time of 11:42.09.

Luke Mar and Dave Rebollini, Jefferson baseball. Shutting down San Mateo’s lineup is no easy task. The Bearcats entered play Saturday hitting .342 as a team. But the Jefferson pitching tandem of Mar and Rebollini rose to the challenge in combining on a three-hitter in a 3-1 non-league win. San Mateo sophomore Dane Anderson enjoyed a 2-for-3 day, with Mar going 4 2/3 innings as the starter to earn the win and Rebollini working 2 1/3 innings to notch the save.

Megan Grant, Aragon softball. The freshman is off to one of the truly great starts in the history of San Mateo County softball. Through eight games, Grant has batted safely in every game while posting a .750 (18 for 24) average with seven doubles, seven home runs and 25 RBIs, and is tied for third in the state in homers among schools reporting their statistics to MaxPreps.com. Last week, she started getting the Barry Bonds treatment, drawing three walks in seven plate appearances. In the four at-bats she did register, she went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs.

Ione Thompson, Mills softball. Speaking of freshmen, Thompson is off to a hot varsity start as well. She has batted safely in each of Mills’ seven games this year, hitting .435 (10 for 25). She is coming off her best week yet, as she led the Vikings to two non-league wins — 11-1 over Sacred Heart Cathedral and 7-6 over Lowell — by going 5 for 8 with four RBIs.
