The defending West Bay Athletic League champion Menlo School boys golf team opened its season Monday with an impressive victory at the 23-team Wildcat Invitational at Fairfax's Meadow Club.

On an overcast, wet day, Menlo started the 18-hole round with two eagles on the first hole, which helped lead to an overall score of 291,10 strokes ahead of its closest competitor Las Lomas.

Sacred Heart Prep's Finn O'Kelly placed second overall with a round of 69, one of just two golfers to shot below 70. Tamalpais' Ben Soicher was the medalist with a round of 68.

Menlo senior co-captain Charlie Hsieh and junior Kripa Dharan each shot an even-par round of 71.

Hsieh made five birdies, and an eagle on the par-5 first hole. Senior co-captain Seth Pope also eagled the first hole.

Menlo took top team honors thanks to a balanced effort, being the only team to shoot under 300.

Pope shot a 74, sophomore Jeremy Yun a 75 and sophomore Troy Demmon finished with an 89.

Menlo opens WBAL play with a rivalry match against Sacred Heart Prep at Palo Alto Hills at 3:30 pm Wednesday.
