Summer @ SHS

Jump Start for Grade 6

Jump Start is a summer program of fun and educational courses designed to support and ease the transition to middle school for rising 6th grade students attending Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton. The program focuses on academic domains critical to middle school success and affords students an opportunity to work with Sacred Heart faculty, get comfortable on campus and come to know a small group of their classmates prior to the start of school. Additionally, participants will receive their SHS tech device so they can begin to work with applications and programs used regularly in 6th grade.

Jump Start 2017 will run from August 7 to August 18, 2017 with classes meeting from 9:00am to 12:00pm Monday through Friday. Attendance is mandatory at all classes and during both weeks. Tuition for Jump Start 2017 is $595.00 and financial assistance is available. Registration for Jump Start 2017 will open in March.

  • Reading for Understanding

    This course is designed to refine and hone literacy skills for incoming 6th grade students. Students will focus on important skills such as quoting to support ideas, making inferences, determining importance and themes, identifying point of view/bias, comparing/contrasting events or characters, etc. Students will gain exposure to valuable techniques they can employ when approaching reading assignments in all academic domains.
     
  • Organization and Study Strategies

    The course will focus on key organization and study skills that promote student success in middle school. Topics will include time management, use of a personal planner, prioritization of tasks, and managing electronic files. Students will also learn and practice strategies to study effectively, improve memory, and organize information and ideas. All students will be issued their SHS tech device and personal planner on the first day of class.
  • Writing with Focus and Purpose

    Students in this course will review foundational language skills critical to success in the 6th grade writing program. Students will learn and practice effective strategies to employ when writing in response to a variety of prompts. The following genres will be explored: informative-narratives, informative, descriptive and persuasion. Revision and editing skills will be introduced. Each student will leave with a ‘tool-kit’ of writing tips and resources to help with 6th grade coursework.
