The Lower & Middle Schools Curricular Drama program is committed to providing engaging, innovative, high-quality theatre education to students of all cultures, ages, abilities, and levels of interest. We encourage students to grow both as artists and as people through lessons designed to stimulate the imagination; boost self-confidence; explore the body, voice, and mind; and develop skills of improvisation, play-making, acting, dance, and voice. We seek to inspire the artists and innovators of the future.
Our after school program offers additional dramatic opportunities for students who wish to extend beyond the classroom experiences. These full-scale productions are published plays and musicals which rehearse after school. We focus on performance skills, community building and personal sense of accomplishment and confidence.

Currently, the Dance program is an 8th grade elective during the school day. Sacred Heart also offers three after-school Dance programs (Hip Hop for Preschool/Kindergarten & Lower School) and a Middle School dance team for the more experienced dancer. The curriculum includes learning the fundamentals of dance vocabulary and training in a variety of choreographic styles. The styles include jazz, modern/contemporary, hip hop, Latin/salsa, African, swing and ballet techniques. During the class students learn a series of warm-up exercises to develop body placement and muscles; loco-motor movements across the floor; dance combinations that use all the elements and styles of dance to create a choreography piece. The students will also have an opportunity to express themselves through creating their own choreographies. The main emphasis of the dance program is to be present with the body and create a space of self-expression with dance as the art form.
The SHP Theatre program offers comprehensive experience for students interested in both performance and production. Courses address foundational principles of acting--technique, improvisation, sense memory, scene objectives--to more advanced work in the development of personal monologues, scene study, textual analysis, to full scale productions and showcases. Opportunities for students interested in theatrical production--set building, costumes, stage makeup, etc.—and backstage management, as well.
