SHS India Project

In 2010, SHS initiated the "SHS India Project," an effort to build bridges with the Sacred Heart educational institutions in that country by raising awareness, funding, and other means of support for the extraordinary work being done by the RSCJ and Sacred Heart educators in Mumbai and rural India.
To date, the SHS community has raised more than $45,000 to support the RSCJ ministries working with women’s empowerment groups and community-based schooling, teaching the developmentally disabled in Mumbai, funding student scholarships at Sophia Nursery and Sophia College in Mumbai, and refurbishing the Christian ashram in Rishikesh in the Himalayan foothills.

Faculty Ambassadors

As part of the India Project's ongoing effort, seven SHS faculty ambassadors representing a range of disciplines have visited the schools in India to learn from faculty and students there, and explore the work of the RSCJ in the community. In 2015, the Atherton campus hosted its first teacher on exchange from Sophia College in Mumbai, and in 2016, another SHS teacher will be traveling, teaching, and conducting fieldwork in India through an SHS-granted scholarship.

In addition, student opportunities connected to Project India have included both travel-study and service, with additional opportunities made available to SHS families.
