At the young age of 21, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in Paris, just after the French Revolution. Through a period of great upheaval, she envisioned an educational model that would nurture, inspire and equip children to take action and do good, saying, “Your example, even more than your words, will be an eloquent lesson to the world."
Today, Sophie’s message is alive in her students and educators, globally.
The Religious of the Society of the Sacred Heart and lay Sacred Heart educators have carried out and expanded upon her imperative of educational excellence over the last two centuries. The Network of Sacred Heart schools is an association of 24 Catholic schools that span across the United States and Canada with nearly 150 schools internationally. Independent yet united in spirit and purpose, Sacred Heart Schools around the world believe in educating the whole child and preparing them to live fully, wisely and justly. At the core of the Sacred Heart education are our Goals and Criteria: strong principles that guide the intentions of our 200-year tradition.
Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton’s culture and identity are inextricably bound to the vision set forth in the Goals of Sacred Heart Schools. These values form the moral compass that influences the choices made within our community. Learning to draw upon these values during their school days, SHS graduates become young people of conviction, courage, and confidence.
