Welcome to our Program!

Sacred Heart’s Preschool & Kindergarten offers an outstanding educational program, combining Montessori-inspired method of education with the faith traditions and educational goals of the Religious of the Sacred Heart - all delivered in a caring and nurturing environment.

We invite you to get to know Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton through the admission process and discuss with us how our unique Preschool - Grade 12 community may be the right fit for your family. We look forward to working with and coming to know your family during this process.

General Admission Information

List of 2 items.

  • Preschool

The Preschool consists of three classrooms with a maximum of 24 students and two certified Montessori teachers in each room. The classrooms are equipped with a full range of Montessori materials which help young children build independence through repeated practice of concrete experiences. Preschoolers also have access to an Outdoor Classroom, staffed by two trained Montessori teachers who design and lead multisensory lessons that engage the whole body and introduce the study of nature. Please click here to learn more about the Montessori Method and classroom experience at Sacred Heart.

A child must be three years old by May 31 to start school in August. The Montessori primary curriculum is a three-year program. Preschool children generally spend two years in the same classroom before moving on to Kindergarten.

Before beginning preschool, a child must be toilet trained, ready to separate from their primary caregivers, and willing to interact positively with children and adults.  We aim to nurture the child's interests by providing a balance of social-emotional learning and academic tasks.

  • Kindergarten

The Kindergarten consists of two classrooms, each with 24 students and two teachers, one of whom is Montessori trained. The academic program combines elements of the Montessori classroom and other research-based programs, such as Writers Workshop, Guided Reading, and Math In Focus. The Kindergarten faculty is trained in Responsive Classroom practices, which combine social and academic learning throughout the day. Elements of this practice include delivering  interactive lessons, and teacher language that gives students meaningful choices and sets high expectations and a positive tone for learning. These programs provide an introduction to the academic and social emotional learning that will continue in Lower Middle School.

Children need to be five years old by May 31 to start Kindergarten in August.*  Admission to Kindergarten is based on a child’s age, social and emotional maturity, and academic readiness. Sacred Heart preschool students typically fill the majority of Kindergarten openings.

For the 2021-2020 school year, we anticipate approximately 8-10 openings for new Kindergarten students.

*Children with summer birthdays who have completed Kindergarten at another school often repeat Kindergarten at SHS.
As we have all adjusted to doing things in a new way this year, Covid-19 has both forced and allowed us to reimagine the admission process. Fall 2020 will look different than in years past. Please visit our Virtual Admission Portal and then in early September we will post updates about the necessary details to prepare for the launch of the 2021-22 season. If you have specific questions before then, we are here! Please do not hesitate to contact us.
