Lauren von Thaden and Kristine Fischer-Colbrie must have made Sacred Heart Prep teammate Cameron Gordon very happy.

"It's all about beating Menlo," Gordon told a couple of local sportswriters after the Gators handed Notre Dame-Belmont its first loss of the season a week ago. "We have to beat Menlo."

The sting of losing in last year's CCS Division II championship game still fresh in their minds, the Gators needed a win like this to brush aside any lingering doubt that they are championship material.

Given the chance to rescind her comments about the Knights, Gordon did not back down. She stood behind her words and then went out and made it happen Thursday, with a lot of help from her friends. Sacred Heart Prep took the short trip to Menlo and handed its host a 1-0 victory.

As a result, the Gators (4-0, 9-3) are firmly entrenched in first place in the West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division. Menlo (1-2-1, 5-4-2) and the Tigers each have two losses. Notre Dame-San Jose upset Notre Dame-Belmont, 1-0.

Sacred Heart Prep has the full 12 points from four wins. Crystal Springs Uplands is in second place with five points after four games. The Gators make the trip to Hillsborough to take on the Gryphons at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Knights host Los Altos, 5-0 in the SCVAL El Camino Division, at 11 a.m.

There is still plenty of time for the rest of the WBAL to catch the Gators, as the game against CSU completes the first half of the league season.

Every team gets another shot at Sacred Heart Prep, though Gordon may likely be thinking "Bring it on." (Of course, there's no way to know what she's really thinking).

Von Thaden, one of the school's top golfers as well, scored in the 66th minute, slotting in a rebound shot by Fischer-Colbrie after a Menlo save. Over the final 10 minutes, the Knights dominated possession and got off several quality shots that just missed.

The top three teams in the Foothill Division earn automatic bids into the CCS playoffs. The WBAL also has a guaranteed fourth spot but that goes to the winner of a playoff between Foothill No. 4 and Skyline No. 1, where Priory currently reigns supreme.

The Panthers beat Castilleja, 4-0, Thursday at El Camino Park and are 5-0 in league play with a scoring differential of 30-1 thus far.

Priory hosts Eastside College Prep at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Castilleja travels to Pinewood for a 3:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
