The Menlo boys improved to 5-0 in West Bay Athletic League play with a 62-45 win in the nightcap.
The Menlo girls broke a three-game losing streak with a hard-fought 69-65 win in the matinee.
Sam Erisman scored 34 points for Menlo (10-7, 1-2) in the girls game.
“I’d been looking forward to this game for a while,’’ Erisman said. “This is my senior year and we’ve never lost to Sacred Heart.’’
The Gators (9-5, 1-2) were hungry for a win as well. They went into the fourth quarter trailing, 53-48, but went on a 13-4 run to take a 65-62 lead on a 3-pointer by Grace Battles.
Menlo, which hosts Notre Dame-Belmont at 6 p.m. Thursday, answered with a 3-pointer by Mallory North to tie the score and took the lead on Erisman’s baseline drive with 29 seconds left. Two free throws by De’Jeane Stine closed out the scoring.
“Sacred Heart played really well; we were fortunate to beat them,’’ Menlo coach John Paye said. “It was a credit to our seniors, Sam Erisman and De’Jeane Stine.’’
Erisman’s 34 points was a career high.
“What I liked about her game was her doing a little bit of everything,’’ Paye said. “Like Russell Westbrook.’’
Charlotte Levison led Sacred Heart Prep with 20 points. Tatum Angotti scored 17 and Battles had 15 for the Gators, who host Eastside College Prep at 5 p.m. Friday.
In the boys game, junior post player Riley Woodson scored 26 points to lead Menlo (8-5, 5-0).
“It’s such an incredible advantage at the high school level to have a 6-7 guy who finishes,’’ Menlo coach Keith Larsen said. “You can just throw it in the paint.’’
Woodson had eight points in the first half but really got it going in the third quarter when he scored nine consecutive points. Included in that salvo were a pair of slam dunks in transition that lifted the Menlo cheering section to a higher level of hysteria.
“It was a great feeling,’’ Woodson said. “The first one was off a good pass. The second one I got the rebound and knew I could go all the way with it.’’
Woodson tacked on nine more points in the fourth quarter for an 18-point half and 26-point game.
Larsen was also quick to give credit to the defensive job turned in by Hayden Pegley.
SHP’s Tevin Panchal tried to single-handedly keep the Gators in the game in the first half, scoring 18 points. He scored 11 of his team’s 14 in the second quarter.
But he went scoreless in the second half with Pegley, also the quarterback on the football team as well as Menlo’s student body president, hounding him.
Kyle Stalder added 13 for SHP (3-2, 6-8), which hosts Eastside College Prep at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Joe Foley, who scored 40 points against Eastside and then sat out the next two games with back stiffness, scored 14 for Menlo, which travels to Harker for a 6:30 p.m. game Friday.
