Cameron Gordon had a little bit of trouble getting her head around Sacred Heart Prep's amazing come-from-behind 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten Notre Dame-Belmont on Thursday.

She had no trouble imagining the Gators winning their girls soccer match. It was the way they won that knocked her for a loop.

"I don't think you could have predicted that," Gordon said. "I still can't comprehend what happened. It's better than I hoped for."

Sacred Heart Prep (2-0, 7-3) rose to the top of the West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division standings because it waited until the last second to tie the match and then score the go-ahead goal in extra time.

It was the only time the Gators ever led. Needless to say, it was also the perfect time to take its first lead.

After the first week of league action, the Gators are the only team completely unscathed. Crystal Springs Uplands (1-0-1) is in second place after tying Menlo, 2-2.

In SCVAL action, Palo Alto (2-0-1, 8-0-1) toppled visiting Homestead, 2-0, and in the PAL Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton shut down visiting Burlingame, 5-0.

Lindsey Johnson scored twice for Sacred Heart Prep, including a well-placed shot that evaded the goalie's hands for the game-winner. Gordon assisted on both goals. Sophie Amid-Hozour assisted on Gordon's goal.

"I was just focused on the goal," Johnson said of her game winner, which she neither rushed nor kicked all that hard. It was simply placed right.

Notre Dame, which played in the West Catholic Athletic League last season, controlled a good portion of the game and played tight defense for the most part.

Gordon's tied the game by sliding into the ball just as a defender and the Tigers' goalkeeper descended on her. The ball trickled past both of them and into the net.

Beating a team the caliber of Notre Dame had to be something special, right?

"Yeah, it's a big win and all but we won this game so we could beat Menlo," Gordon said. "It's all about Menlo. We have to beat them in everything."

Sacred Heart Prep makes the short trip to Menlo next Thursday. In the meantime, Notre Dame-San Jose visits Tuesday.

Menlo continued its tear, defeating Pinewood, 63-53, at home Thursday to improve to 4-0 in the West Bay Athletic League, 6-4 overall.

Sacred Heart Prep (3-1, 5-7) also won, beating host Crystal Springs Uplands, 74-39, to set up an interesting game with the visiting Knights on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Gators play St. Mary's-Berkeley at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Piedmont.

Eric DeBrine scored 11 points to lead four players with double-digit scoring. John deGrosz, Tevin Panchal, and Evan Nichols each added 10 points.

In Menlo's win, junior Riley Woodson had 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He also pulled down 18 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and his third consecutive.

Thomas Brown pitched in with 18 points and six rebounds while fellow junior JH Tevis had nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
