Mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe Painted in Homer Center

Artist Fabian Debora spent a week on campus painting the mural and participating in class lectures

Joining the many beautiful images of Mater Admirabilis across the Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton campus, visiting artist Fabian Debora painted a vibrant and captivating mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Michael J. Homer Center for Science and Student Life.

Through SHP’s relationship with Homeboy Industries, an organization that provides support and training for formerly gang-involved or incarcerated individuals, Debora was invited to campus to spend a five-day residency painting the mural and serving as a guest lecturer in classes. He also participated in the Prep’s daylong social justice teach-in, which focused on race relations, the criminal justice system and immigration, among other topics.

“My experience [at Sacred Heart] has been nothing but greatness. I am amazed at how this school allows for these types of conversations to take place,” said Debora, reflecting on the social justice teach-in. “For me, it has been great to see how passionate this school is about informing [students] and bringing awareness.”

Culminating Debora’s time on campus, students, parents, faculty and staff gathered for a dedication ceremony, recounting the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and placing roses in front of the mural.
