Visit SHS

Located on 63 acres of land in the residential town of Atherton, the historic SHS campus is more than a century old, but through careful planning, renovation, and new construction, the school today is a mix of traditional architecture and sustainable construction. Opened in 1898, the stately brick Main Building is the eldest structure on campus, and continues today as a primary academic and administrative space. Constructed in 2012, the LMS Stevens Library is entirely green-designed, recognized as a “Net Zero Energy” building by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI)  for producing more energy than takes to operate--the first library in the country and first school structure in California to earn this status. A small farm with livestock and fowl, as well as a 10-acre vegetable garden, have added to the school’s unique appeal, and visitors and students alike are hard pressed not to pause by the farm’s animal pens--especially in springtime when baby rabbits, goat kids, and chicks are in abundance.

Pointing to the school’s Catholic origins, a number of sacred spaces, meditative grottos, and religious artworks can be found throughout the campus, and many retired members of the school’s founding order, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (RSCJ), reside at the on-site Oakwood Retirement Center or are laid to rest in the small, sheltered cemetery located in the heart of the grounds.
