Athletics Overview

Lower & Middle Schools Athletics Overview

The Athletics program for the Lower and Middle School is for grades 4-8 only and is intended to provide a positive experience in an environment of sportsmanship and learning. The children who participate are taught the fundamentals of each sport and learn the value of cooperation in team play. Participation is voluntary and encouraged.

The athletic department supports a no-cut policy which allows every child a chance to be part of a team. The goal of each team is for children to enjoy themselves while developing appropriate skills and learning the game. The athletic program provides athletes with the opportunity to maximize their potential in a competitive situation while developing organizational and leadership skills.

Our teams compete in the West Bay Middle School Athletic League (WBAL).  The WBAL is a newly formed league comprised of 14 independent private schools.  In addition to the WBAL we compete in a Middle School League for tennis as well as the Peninsula Water Polo League (PWPL). We also belong to the Positive Coaching Alliance and require all coaches and at least one parent to attend a PCA workshop before the season begins. For more information, go to http://www.positivecoach.org/.

Preparatory Athletics Overview

Sacred Heart Schools' mission to “Educate the Whole Child” carries on from the classroom to the field of play. Our athletic programs are considered an important part of this educational process.

Our administration and coaches understand that lessons taught in the athletic “classroom,” such as teamwork, effort, respect and commitment, will last long after the final scores are tallied. Our athletic programs focus on competing with honor and pride for our school while at the same time developing what in many cases are life-long friendships and memories.

We feel it important that each student who endeavors to be a student athlete is given that chance. Nine of our twenty-two athletic program offerings are considered “no cut,” meaning that if a student is willing to dedicate the time and energy to one of those programs, they will be afforded the opportunity to compete for their school. We take great pride in knowing that on an annual basis approximately 75% of our student body will be student athletes.

These lofty levels of student participation have not negated the high level of success in our athletic programs. Sacred Heart Prep teams have won numerous league and section championships…even a few state championships as well.   These achievements have come without compromising our strong belief in sportsmanship and fair play.

All that being said, perhaps our greatest accomplishment is the role we play in the building of community as a Christian value. Sacred Heart Prep supports the belief that the true value of high school athletics comes from the life lessons it teaches. We are committed to providing a meaningful and memorable experience for all of our student athletes.

Our teams compete in the West Bay Athletic League (WBAL), the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL),  the Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) and the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL).
