Preschool through Middle School
Preschool and Kindergarten
Sacred Heart’s Preschool and kindergarten classrooms offer a safe, loving environment for young children just beginning their school experience. Following the Montessori curriculum and principles of education that a child learns best within a social environment that supports each individual’s unique development, a variety of opportunities are available for students to participate in various fee-based enrichment classes.
Enrichment classes are offered on campus before and after school, and change from year to year. Classes have included golf and soccer for preschool students and chess, carpentry and pre-engineering with Legos for kindergarten students.
Lower School Grades 1-5
Within a 1-8 Elementary experience, student life activities for grades 1-5 provide a number of diverse opportunities designed to encourage and maximize each student’s personal growth and potential.
Spiritually, the children plan and participate in a variety of religious and liturgical activities. Through song and skit, prayer and meditation, students connect the greater school community to the sacred. It is our greatest hope that this will encourage and deepen their developing relationship with God.
Our Service Learning program offers all students the opportunity to grow in their appreciation of their responsibility to the world around them, sensitizing them to the needs of others and their own obligations to address those needs. As future leaders, students also participate in Social and Emotional Learning, which includes conflict resolution training, environmental and drug awareness projects, and other activities designed to foster attitudes of respect and compassion for all.
There are a variety of enrichment activities available for grades 1-5 as well, spanning the spectrum from cooking to science, from chess to martial arts. Beginning in grade four, students can participate in our competitive after-school sports program, join the band and chorus, and build for tomorrow in our robotics club. There are yearly drama productions in which every student may play a part.
Middle School Grades 6-8
The Middle School is dedicated to being a community where all students can find their niche, where all can grow, and where all can excel and take pride in their individual and collective accomplishments. To this end, student life for grades 6 – 8 offers a number of opportunities designed to encourage and maximize each student’s personal growth and potential outside of the classroom experience.
Students can participate in activities outside of the classroom that span the spectrum of performing arts and athletic disciplines, with little to no experience necessary. For example, the performing arts opportunities outside of the classroom experience provide options that encourage students to participate in regular drama productions as well as instrumental ensembles that meet outside of the regularly scheduled class times. Furthermore, the athletic program provides a wide range of after-school organized sports throughout the school year for students at various skill levels, from beginning to varsity.
In addition, students in the Middle School have several leadership opportunities, such as serving in student government as members of the student council and participating in our leadership alliances. Other social activities for grades 6 – 8 include the 6th grade fun nights and 7th and 8th grade dances.
Extended Care Program
After the school day, an Extended Care program is offered to students enrolled in Sacred Heart Preschool (full day students) through eighth grade. Students are divided into two classrooms: one room is for preschool, kindergarten and first graders, and the other room is for second through eighth grades. The goal of the program is to provide an environment the will satisfy each child’s needs by offering a balance of activities including homework supervision, outdoor play time, age appropriate games and activities and healthy snacks. After school care starts at the dismissal of the regular school day and ends at 6:00 p.m. Before school care starts at 7:30 a.m. and breakfast is provided.
