Preschool & Kindergarten
Preschool and Kindergarten at Sacred Heart offer a unique educational environment combining the Montessori method of pedagogy with the faith traditions and educational goals of the Religious of the Sacred Heart.
Our highly experienced and credentialed teachers create a safe and nurturing environment where each child is guided through the process of creating their own learning.
We know our admissions process has many steps. We want to do more than just give you the facts about our academic program. We want you to come away with a sense of who we are and what we stand for so you are able to make an informed decision that will benefit your family for many years to come.
Preschool
The Preschool consists of three classrooms with twenty-four students and two certified Montessori teachers in each room. A child must be three years old by May 31 in order to begin school in September. The Montessori primary curriculum is a three-year program. Preschool children generally spend two years in the same classroom before moving on to Kindergarten.
Before beginning Preschool at SHS, a child must be toilet trained, ready to separate from their parents and able to interact positively with other children and adults. A child who cannot adjust socially may be asked to withdraw and re-apply for admission at a later date. At this level of education, we consider a child’s academic achievement secondary to their social and emotional development.
Pre-Kindergarten
The Pre-Kindergarten program is a developmental program for young fives. Children with June, July and August birthdays will automatically be considered and typically will spend a second (or sometimes a third) year in their preschool classroom before moving on to Kindergarten. The primary purpose of the Pre-Kindergarten program is to give these children an extra year to mature. It is not an enrichment program nor is it a remedial program.
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten consists of two classrooms of twenty-four students and two teachers in each room. Admission to kindergarten is based on a child’s age, social and emotional maturity, and academic readiness. SHS preschool students fill the majority of kindergarten spaces leaving approximately 10 openings each year. Children with summer birthdays who have completed kindergarten at another school often repeat kindergarten at SHS.
